A Day in Bafa Nature park
As the first rays of the sun spilled over the Latmos Mountains, I found myself at the entrance of the park, my backpack brimming with essentials – water, snacks, a camera, binoculars for birdwatching, a map, and, of course, my insatiable curiosity. The entrance fee was remarkably affordable, making it a perfect destination for budget travelers.
Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit Bafa Lake, with the mild Mediterranean climate making outdoor activities a delight. The park opens its gates at 8 am and closes at 7 pm. I recommend starting early to fully embrace what the park has to offer.
The day started with a hike on one of the park’s well-marked trails, each offering unique views of the lake, mountains, and endemic flora and fauna. The chirping of birds echoed throughout the park, providing a serene soundtrack to our adventure. For birdwatchers, Bafa Lake is a paradise, hosting more than 200 species, including the Dalmatian Pelican and the Pygmy Cormorant.
Visiting Ancient Ruins of Heraklia
After a hearty picnic lunch under the olive groves, I decided to explore the ancient ruins of Herakleia. The city, located within the park, is a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Walking among the ancient stone walls, it was easy to imagine the bustling life that once existed here.
The afternoon was spent on a boat tour, the gentle waves of Bafa Lake mirroring the mountainous skyline. The boatman, a local, regaled us with stories of the lake’s history and its importance to the region. The boat tour is highly recommended, not just for the stunning views but also for the opportunity to engage with local culture.
Ruins of Yediler Monastery
As the day neared its end, I decided to visit the Yediler Monastery. The hike to the monastery was a bit challenging, but the panoramic lake views from the top were well worth the effort. The monastery, perched precariously on the side of the mountain, held a sense of tranquility and mystery. As I watched the sun set over Bafa Lake, the monastery’s silhouette against the fiery sky was a sight to behold.
Don’t worry if camping isn’t your style. The park has several affordable accommodation options, including charming guesthouses that offer delectable local cuisine. But if you’re like me and love sleeping under the stars, the park has several camping areas with basic facilities.
